Government:
A thorough investigation occurred into 29 oils rigs in the Gulf of Mexico in an effort to determine the cause of the disaster. Secretaries of the department of the interior (U.S federal government responsible for the managements and conservation of land ad natural resources), homeland security, the EPA administrator and NOAA were immediately administered to the Gulf coast to assist with the disaster. The department of the interior released a press release announcing that the major inspections and investigation of the Deepwater drilling rigs had no major violations affecting the spill. The U.S secretary of the Interior put in place a suspension on all drilling on the out outer continental shelf for a six month period. A no flight zone was issued over the Gulf of Mexico and the affected area. Obama made his first speech from the Oval office addressing the crisis stating: "This oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced... Make no mistake: we will fight this spill with everything we've got for as long as it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever's necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy." Associated Businesses: Hornbeck off shore services a company that had stakes in Deepwater drilling filled a suit in the U.S district court seeking an injunction (a type of resolution and remedy to a problem) to end the a suspension. This was proved successful and the suspension was lifted. The white house reacted implying that they would immediately appeal the injunction and the Department of interior released a new order that would eliminate any further injunctions and appeals stating that the moratorium is suspension is completely necessary. Company responsible: BP was sent a $69 million bill from the U.S government for the U.S government’s clean-up effort. There were claims that BP was attacked by the U.S government in the handling of the crisis. BP initially down played the accident with CEO Tony Hayward stating the amount of oil was “Relatively tiny” in comparison to the “very big ocean” and the environmental impact would be “very very modest” but later apologized for his previous statements. A series of television and newspaper advertisements (appearing in the New York Times, the Wall Street journal’s etc.) featuring the CEO Tony Hayward apologizing for the spill stating “We will make this right”. A sponsored link by BP was placed on Google and other search engines when oil spill related terms were searched. 4 months after the spills Tony Hayward quit under an agreement allowing him to receiving £500,000 a year until he was 60. Environmentalist: Environmentalist were outraged about eh spill and the management. The responses was deemed effective from the government though the environmentalist groups lashed out at BP for downplaying the spill and not effectively addressing the issue. Many volunteers helped with the clean-up effort of the oil itself and helping to clean the oil covering animals. a mass installation was erected in the Grand Isle, Louisiana using crosses as gravestones marking the damage caused by the oil spill. |
